Anyway, it not so much bars and the like, IMO. The Town of Wise needs to embrace the college more in order to attract more businesses that would locate within the town in order to cater to the college student body and staff alike. No doubt that would include rastaurant/bars like "Appleby's" and "Bennigan's", but there are probably other types of establishments that could be coaxed into locating there.

Just look at Blacksburg. VT essentially is Blacksburg now. It totally surrounds and occupies most of the Town of Blacksburg. The Town of Wise needs to look for and encourage that type of growth and expansion within the town for its economic future and not just strip malls and such. Historically, it seems that the Town has somewhat shied away from really embracing the full potential the college could bring to the Town. I don't know the reason for it, but seems to be the case IMO.

Tbe key would be having a service like that, and having word of mouth of it being available. Also the difficulty of not having the vomit special as your only or main source of transportation.

I agree, Wise needs to become a college town but I don't know if they ever will. The college is 'out there' so it doesn't interfere with the simple life as much.

You still cant buy beer on Sundays in BSG to my knowledge. And yes, I see your point. I know some very religous people who do much worse stuff than me and I just laugh. Sometimes religon causes more harm than good imo. I really do think religon has hampered our economic growth in this area.

i dont think people of wise want to turn the town into a college town...but i wish they would lighten up a bit...college kids need some sort of outlet

I'm staying at UVA-Wise this fall and all of my roomates are from Northern VA. I've talked to two of them online and via phone, they are amazed at what little there is to do here. I told them the biggest thing we had going here was High School Football on Friday Nights. I thought they were going to flip when I told them you had to drive an hour to go to a mall.

I think your point is very good and is a major factor that will eventually limit the amount of enrollment growth the college can expect in the future. Yes, the current attractive cost of an education at UVa-Wise compared to many other institutions of learning will probably continue to be the greatest determining factor in enrollment growth. But, the lack of access to recreational, dining and shopping opportunities can only increase as a factor affecting enrollment growth over time. The Town has a wonderful opportunity within its grasp. As the college continues to transform and expand its campus in preparation for perceived future growth in enrollment, the Town can truly embrace the college and try to develop possible recreational, dining and shopping opportunities in an more progressive manner. The Town's prospects have improved some recently with the proposed "Shoppes On Main" project that is currently underway. But, much more of these types of developments are needed to really address the lack of sufficient opportunities that will be demanded by the growing college student body. But, all of this is just my opinion, of course.

The Mall comment got me thinking how much adational population would be needed before the Wise Norton area could support one?

id say jus have like a flat taxi service as opposed to jus a designated driver one. if i was you i would be careful about that though, driving around some drunks can be dangerious, not to mention someone could call you and then try 2 rob u.
